Hear from the Next-Gen team about how subsidised laser land levelling is transforming rice farmers’ experiences in Northwest Cambodia.
In Northwest Cambodia, rice is more than a crop – it is survival. Most smallholder households depend on it for income, yet uneven fields have long undermined their efforts. Uneven land wastes water, reduces fertiliser efficiency, and encourages weeds and pests. As one farmer explained, “Even after pumping water from morning until night, some parts drowned while others stayed too dry.” With input costs rising and paddy prices stagnant at around 760,000 riel per tonne (~US$190), many farmers felt trapped. One farmer said:
“I could only harvest 3.5 tonnes per hectare. Some plots gave less. The land decided for me, not my effort.”
Laser land levelling intervention
To address these challenges, the Next-Gen project introduced subsidised laser land levelling (LLL). Precision technology for smallholders was previously unimaginable because of high costs. “I had no intention of using it because it was too expensive,” recalled one farmer. “Then the project came and helped cover half the cost.”
The subsidy made the difference between dream and reality. More than financial support, it gave farmers the chance to see what technology could achieve on their own land. “They finished in one day. Before, we ploughed two or three times and still couldn’t get it even,” explained another participant.
Transformative results
The results were immediate and visible. Farmers reported fewer weeds, lower labour costs, and more efficient water and fertiliser use. Irrigation time was halved, diesel costs dropped, and yields rose.
“Before, 40% of my land was full of weeds. Now, maybe only 10%”.
Beyond numbers, laser land levelling renewed pride and motivation. “When I see the rice growing evenly, it makes me happy. Before I didn’t even want to look at my field. Now I visit it every day,” shared another. The intervention not only improved productivity — it restored dignity and optimism, turning frustration into satisfaction and sparking new enthusiasm for farming.
Lessons, adoption and outlook
The visible success of levelled fields quickly caught the attention of neighbours. “People came and asked about costs and results. They want to try it next year,” said one farmer. Early adopters became local demonstration sites, showing what was possible when technology became accessible.



However, affordability remains a key concern. “If it is not subsidised, we cannot pay,” several farmers admitted. The subsidy was not only a financial incentive but also an entry point for learning and experimentation.
Laser land levelling transformed more than fields. It shifted community attitudes. Farmers now speak of their plots with hope rather than worry. “They told me, your field is so clean and beautiful. I told them, this is because of the project’s help,” said one farmer. Another added, “This project opened the door. Once we see the benefits, we cannot go back.”
For many smallholders, the subsidy made the impossible achievable. By lowering the cost barrier, the project turned hesitant interest into confident experimentation. Farmers who once viewed laser levelling as “for others” now stand proudly beside their even fields.
“I never imagined my land could look like this. Now I want to level three more hectares.”
The project demonstrates that targeted subsidies can catalyse more than individual adoption — they can foster community-led extension, where farmers teach farmers. By making high-cost technology visible and affordable, the initiative encouraged peer learning and accelerated local innovation.
While the household-level benefits are clear, the project also recognises that farmers operate within broader structural constraints — from volatile rice markets to limited access to land and credit. Although these systemic issues cannot be solved by one intervention alone, acknowledging them helps frame local successes within wider efforts toward equitable rural development.
Ultimately, laser land levelling has proven to be more than a technical innovation. It has restored dignity, strengthened resilience, and inspired lasting change across communities — showing that when opportunity meets support, farmers can truly level the field and lift their hopes.
